Before You Hire a DJ

IMG_1416

Here are three things to remember before you hire your wedding DJ.

1. Only 1 DJ is needed at Wedding Reception.

An organized disc jockey is able to handle any size reception (how many perform your job?) Lack of experience and two dj’s will cause confusion

2. Remember Hiring from a Talent Agency

Avoid costly Agency or Company’s fees. Gordon Slagle’s DJ service is not an agency but friends working with each other.

3. Contract is Always Needed!

Friend, Co-worker, Relative or Professional. Without a contract, you have no recourse in case they bail last minute or do not show up. Make sure it states, price, number of hours, what is included such as meetings, equipment, back-up equipment, attire, drinking or providing food )

E-Mails are great but talk to your DJ. Their voice, personality, and flair are your event!

Questions to ask a DJ before you hire them

1. Are you insured? Can you supply me with proof of liability?
2. Will you be willing to play requests and discuss music ahead of time?
3. Do you use Professional Equipment?
4. Do you provide backup equipment at my event?
5. Does the Disc Jockey know the proper etiquette for your type of party?
6. How much time do you allow for set-up?
7. Do you provide a written contract?
8. Will you be suitably dressed for our occasion?
9. Do you belong to a professional organization or trade group?

Other Items to Note

Disc Jockey rates vary based on talent, experience, emcee ability, service, coordination, equipment needed, music knowledge, mixing ability and personality.

Rates for the DJ industry vary greatly, ranging from $350.00 to over $5,000.00. The best price is not always the best deal, especially if you are planning a wedding. As a matter of fact, surveys conclude that nearly 80% of brides would have spent more money on their entertainment and made it their #1 priority in hindsight.

A full-service disc jockey company will normally invest 12 to 30 hours to your special event but it may appear that you are only paying for “4 hours”. Consultations, music purchasing & editing, preparation, set-up and tear-down, education and other business related endeavors add up to the overall success of your special occasion.

Many Dj’s have reviews and lists of places they have played. Do the vendors they list use their services for family or venue events?

Last year my service was hired for 9 Rescue Wedding Receptions. What is a Rescue Reception? The client hired a DJ service without a contract and may have also put money down. Two weeks or less before the event date, the performer backed out because of work, sickness or other reasons. In reality, the performer most likely was offered more money from another client.
